A few months ago, I tried my hand at making a kimono in flowing, silky, printed model fabric. I loved the result and got all sorts of very enthusiastic comments from friends so will be moving into production in the coming months. Watch out for my Kimonos in the New Year!
My happy whacky picture taken by a friend in Ladakh, high in the Himalayas was the start of a train of events which now sees me making kimonos for a designer from Sweden/Czechia which are likely to be sold in Bali!
So, imagine this amazing and beautiful example of sharing opportunities. Swedish designer and entrepreneur, Bjorn, places the order. I am an independent designer with a very small business; Bjorn and I agree that I will source the material from a huge Aladdin’s cave textile showroom in Delhi. On my instructions they ship the fabric by truck to a small fair-trade workshop near Kolkata, which does safe, high quality, dyeing and hand printing. They then send the gorgeous fabric to me in South India for sewing. Bjorn will be supplying them in Bali to small businesses selling to holiday makers.
Now I know that there is a growing movement for buying locally and these kimonos certainly don’t fit that criteria but what we do have is a number of small businesses trying hard to follow principles of fair trade, all getting an opportunity to take beautiful products to a market ready to buy them. Our aim is that everyone will benefit, not least the final customer who will receive an exquisite, well designed and beautifully made kimono.
